Llano football wins district opener over Cole

The Llano High School football team overwhelmed San Antonio Cole 37-0 Sept. 22 in the District 13-3A Division I opener for both teams.

The Yellow Jackets (3-2, 1-0) now focus their attention on a road trip to Luling (2-3, 0-1)at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29.

Llano seized control of the contest quickly, racing to a 14-0 advantage in the opening quarter that ballooned to 24-0 by the half. The Jackets’ scoring ended in the third quarter after they added another 13 points for the final score.

In earning the win, Llano went back to its ground-and-pound attack it utilized so successfully in winning 13 consecutive ball games in 2022. By the end, the Jackets had 49 rushes for 268 yards, averaging 5.5 yards per touch. Three of their five touchdowns came from runs. Eight Jackets had at least one carry.

Junior running back Trey Mote had 13 rushes for 66 yards and a touchdown followed by junior quarterback Colton Bailey with eight carries for 55 yards, senior running back Cooper McWilliams had seven carries for 40 yards, and sophomore running back Brayton Shaw had five rushes for 40 yards. Junior receiver R.J. Coplin had a 16-yard touchdown run, while senior running back Fitz Kennedy had six carries for seven yards and a score.

Meanwhile, the passing game didn’t allow the Cougars to pack the box.

Freshman quarterback Luke Davis, who was moved up to the varsity during the week, completed 8 of 10 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. Twenty-seven of those yards went to Bailey on one pass.

Bailey completed 5 of 10 passes for 63 yards and a score.

Senior receiver Alex Kachura had three receptions for 60 yards and Coplin caught four passes for 51 yards and a touchdown.

The Cougars had 103 yards of total offense. Junior quarterback Jackson Freds had 13 rushes for 61 yards and completed 7 of 51 passes for 21 yards.

Junior linebacker Tate Morgan led the Llano defense with 13 tackles, eight of which were solo. Mote and seniors Buddy Machuga and Dusty Miller each had a sack. Senior defensive back Charlie White caught an interception.
